Upcoming MacLeod Wildfire Training

1 June 2026

I was planning on slowing down but demand for training is growing. I have several upcoming courses.

This course has also been called “The Enhanced S100” and is designed for everyone who lives, works or recreates in rural and remote BC and may have to deal with a wildfire without organized help. Participant reviews indicate they feel better prepared to accurately assess a wildfire, develop a safe and appropriate plan, and implement suitable actions.

The Safety Section of the MacLeod S100 for Industry is substantially more comprehensive than other S100 courses. I have expanded and simplified the Wildfire Entrapment Avoidance and Burn-over Survival information.

The final evaluation consists of three tabletop scenarios.

The course also contains Prevention and Preparedness information.

This course is being presented on the understanding that it may not be recognized by BC Wildfire in coming years as they implement their new training requirements.

Control Lines built with heavy equipment form the anchor of all subsequent suppression actions. Safety is the priority as equipment operators are often one of the first responders into areas of elevated fire behavior.

Many Zones are struggling to get competent and qualified Line Locators and Construction Supervisors. Worksafe Regulations and the BCWS Contract require Line Locators and Construction Supervisors to be trained and qualified.

I have been providing Line Location and Construction services to BC Wildfire on a contract basis for several years and have always received good evaluations. The content of this course is based on my methods and experiences.

The course details how to safely layout and construct an effective control line with heavy equipment while minimizing unnecessary damage to adjacent values and features.

Again, BC Wildfire is developing their own training internally but it isn’t likely to be ready for the upcoming season.

This is an Awareness level course with a focus on Safety including Wildfire Entrapment Avoidance and Burnover Survival. Designed for people who live, work and/or play in rural and remote BC but don’t have the elevated training requirements of the forest industry.

The MacLeod Wildfire Safety Field Guide is a 47-page pdf available to download onto your phone or tablet for reference on the line. It discusses the 24 hazards commonly encountered on the fire-line with suggested methods to eliminate or mitigate associated risks.

Contact me anytime for scheduling and prices.

It is good to see the cool rainy weather. Stay safe.

We can’t ignore response training. The current situation is a mess and I fear a tragedy is pending. Improving safety for workers and the public is my key concern. We don’t just wait for organized help to find us in remote or rural BC for other situations. Self-rescue is a key component of all avalanche […]

Sliding into the Solstice

I am shutting things down until January and heading for the trails. One of my fondest memories in my forest career is heading home on the last day of work before Christmas in a crew cab full of folks, a load of firewood in the box, a couple of Christmas trees strapped on top, and, […]

Fall Followup Observations on Increasing the Wildfire Resilience of our Regen Stands
7 November 2025

I worked on a wildfire this summer then spent the fall doing layout for salvage harvest and assisting with the fire rehab. It gave me a chance to revisit the area mentioned in my Aug. 4 post (link below) and add to my observations on improving the wildfire resilience of our regenerated stands. Don’t Neglect […]
