Upcoming Training, Seats available for the S100 Wildfire for Industry June 1 and 2

24 May 2024

We have a full S100 Wildfire for Industry planned at the Western Wildfire Training Center in Kelowna June 1 and 2 and there are still seats available. The course is the MacLeod Forest Services training which is designed to better prepare people to deal with a wildfire with little or no outside help. We have a wide variety of people signed up so it should be a good session.

While titled the S100 for Industry we have presented to a wide variety of groups and it has been well received. One of the participant evaluations suggested titling it the “Enhanced S100” as we have added substantial important information particularly regarding safety.

Our Learning Outcomes are more detailed than any existing basic wildfire training. By the end of the Day 1 Theory section every participant will be able to:

  • demonstrate that they can assess and report a wildfire accurately,
  • develop appropriate objectives and plans
  • make required resource requests.

By the end of Day 2 participants will be able to demonstrate competency in five key response skills:

  • set up and run a Mark 3 pump,
  • establish the standard hose lay and operate all appliances,
  • apply water appropriately for a given situation,
  • use and maintain hand tools
  • demobilize the hose lay.

We utilize training assistants for the practical day to keep the instructor/student ratio at a max of 1:6 to allow for more hands on practice. These helpers all have recent and extensive fire line experience so are up to date on current required skills and good practices.

We have had attendees from a wide range of industries and public groups and are getting good reviews.

The training season is winding down so contact me if you want to take this valuable course at our unique training facility.

The recent discussions about forming a federal wildfire response agency have generated a lot of discussion and opinions from experts  on where to focus our taxpayer money. We are Losing Wildfires in Protected and Unmanaged Areas

I am just finishing up the summer field season which included Line Location and Construction Supervision on a few fires in the Southern Interior of BC.  Except in periods of very low fire behavior we lost fires in preserved and unmanaged land. This included parks, streamside (riparian) reserves, wildlife tree patches, special management zones (OGMA, […]
